This hand-carved linocut print was inspired by summer days at a quiet family cabin in Douglas County, Wisconsin. Mirror Lake, not far from Solon Springs and the Brule River, comes alive in mid to late summer when water lilies bloom along its shoreline. Their floating green pads and delicate white flowers create a serene habitat for insects, frogs, fish, birds—and the occasional curious paddler in a canoe or kayak.
To capture this scene, Christy layered colors through selective overprinting. The process began with a base of yellow ink, followed by passes of light blue, bright green, and dark blue. Achieving the depth of color required multiple runs through the press. Four hand-carved blocks were used, with one block further reduced for an additional color pass. Each print was carefully pulled on a Vandercook SP15 cylinder proof press.
